Fresh off Box Office hits New Money, Wedding Party 2 and Wives on Strike 2, Inkblot, Dioni Visions and FilmOne announce the August release of Moms at War a dramedy starring Funke Akindele, Omoni Oboli, Yul Edochie, Eucharia Anumobi and Yul Edochie

Moms at War tells the story of Olaide and Ebubechukwu, two mothers who would do anything for their children. Omoni Oboli stars as Ebubechukwu, a posh career woman who was born with a silver spoon and expects her only daughter to follow in her footsteps. Funke Akindele stars as Olaide, a self-made woman who built herself up from nothing to raise her son and give him the life she did not have.

With their children competing for a place in a prestigious scholars program, everything starts to derail as the mothers go head to head to ensure that their own child wins.

Moms At War soars as a slam bang tale of friendship and motherhood which is stylish, subversive and strikingly funny. It is written by Naz Onuzo known for films such as Wedding Party 2, New Money and My Wife and I and directed by Omoni Oboli, the triple threat box office Queen responsible for such hits as Okafor’s Law and the Wives on Strike films.

Moses Babatope, CEO of Film One says “Having had many successful collaboarations with Inkblot we were pleased to continue the partnership on Moms at War. We have worked with Dioni Visions and Omoni Oboli for many years and are happy to announce our first collaboration with her. Moms at War is the perfect film for women and everyone else as it cloaks in comedy the wars our mothers wittingly and unwittingly fight for us, everyday.”

Review: 5 Movies and the Word

The debut episode of 5 Movies and the Word, a faith-based film festival that seeks to propagate the word through pop culture and live movie screenings was birthed in Calabar, capital of Cross River state on Saturday, 21, July 2018 at the City Church.

The day long festival which is all set to morph into the Calabar International Christian Festival by next year, had as theme, Social good as a Christian value and featured five live movie screenings. The films were diverse in geography, and in their choices of subject matter.

The highlight of the festival was a  special showcase titled Mo, a feature length commissioned specially for the festival and directed by Oto-Obong Ekpenyong.

The screenings began with Sleeved, a non-dialogue short directed by Adeolu Adeniyi and starring Big Brother Naija former housemate, Tokunbo ‘’Tboss’’ Idowu as Kamtoro, a successful actress who must summon up the strength to leave an abusive relationship before permanent damage is done. Steeped in mood and the ability of the actors to convey their emotions non-verbally, Sleeved is a fine addition to the domestic violence canon.

The Israeli feature length documentary Hummus followed. Directed by Oren Rosenfield, Hummus is a tender, feel good love letter to the staple food of the middle east. But Hummus isn’t just concerned with food. The film ever so subtly hints at gender discrimination, toxic masculinity, migration and some other challenges of modern Israeli society. It also examines the complex relationships between Christians, Muslims and Arabs and how they are all bound by a shared love of hummus.

The short, Eno’s Demons directed by Oto-Obong Ekpenyong chronicles a day in the life of Eno, a young lady struggling with depression. Each of the screenings were followed by interactive question and answer segments where members of the audience shared thoughts and lessons derived from the films.

The Lost Café, the second major motion picture helmed by Kenneth Gyang was the fourth entry. The Lost Café, a breezy romantic drama, expertly captures the culture shock and loneliness that usually accompanies persons moving far away from home in the story of Ese, a young lady played by Tunde Aladese, who has to adapt to the challenges of moving to Norway to take up the opportunity of a lifetime. Mixing a cinephile’s love of film history with an entertainer’s eye for crowd pleasing moments, The Lost Café which had the Nigerian leg set in Calabar, received a generous welcome.

After a short break, a red carpet celebration heralded the premiere of Mo, an adaptation of the biblical story of Moses, from the book of Deuteronomy. Using a cast of local actors some of whom were acting for the first time, director Oto-Obong Ekpenyong, who also doubled as the festival’s creative director recreated the story of the birth and coming of age of Moses in a rural Cross River setting.

At the end of the program, Wilfred Okiche, a film critic presented Mo with the special jury prize for the film that most advances the biblical word while The Lost Café won the Audience choice award. Ifesinachi Okoli-Okpagu, writer of the screenplay received the trophy on behalf of the producers of The Lost Café.

In his remarks, Executive Director of the festival and leader of City Church, Calabar, Tony Aleogena-Raphael reiterated the importance of the festival for the word and for the life development center which he leads. In his words, ‘’We must stop merely complaining and criticizing the influences of pop culture but step up to the plate and compete for the hearts and souls of men.’’

Say hello to the Calabar International Christian Festival.

Genevieve Nnaji’s directorial debut, LIONHEART, has been announced as an official selection in the Discovery Section of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), September 6-16, 2018.

Set in Southeast Nigeria, LIONHEART tells the story of a young woman, Adaeze Obiagu (Genevieve Nnaji), who becomes saddled with the responsibility of running her sick father’s business under the suffocating supervision of an intensely crude and eccentric uncle.  Her competing business instincts and family obligations become a catalyst for drastic change not everyone is ready to embrace.

“Film-making is what I love to do,” declared Nnaji. “I am grateful to have had the chance to share my love with millions over the years.  LIONHEART is the beginning of a journey to explore and express my creative interpretation of story-telling, particularly African stories. Africa is a possessor of the most compelling stories as yet untold, and we are determined to tell our stories, our way, through our voices, to the world. And TIFF is the perfect launch for the film.”

Genevieve Nnaji, who will also be seen at TIFF performing alongside Kate Beckinsale in the highly anticipated film, Farming from Director Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, was also celebrated at TIFF 2013 in Half of a Yellow Sun.

Magic Carpet Studios Set To Make Africa’s First 2D Feature Animation Film! Check Out The Teaser Trailer Here!

Many of us might have grown up reading Cyprian Ekwensi’s ‘The Passport of Mallam Ilia’. Anyone remember the Sanchi battle between Usman and Ilia? The prize for that fight-to-the-death was the beautiful princess, Zarah.

Magic Carpet Studios, an animation, illustration and game development studio in Lagos, has set out to repackage this timeless tale for old faithfuls and a new generation. The studio acquired the rights to the book earlier this year, and is in the process of making a 2D animation movie based on the book, the first of its kind to come out of Africa.

Magic Carpet, described by industry experts and enthusiasts as the ‘Disney of Africa’, is no new entrant to crossing frontiers. Its short film projects titled, ‘The Day Morning Never Came’, ‘The Reclamation’ and ‘Corruption: The Musical’, done in partnership with the Creative Youth Initiative against Corruption (CYIAC), powered by the Economic Financial Crimes Commission, beat over 700 nominations from 125 countries to win the Innovative category at the first UN Sustainable Development Goals Action Awards in Germany.

A lineup of renowned actors in Nollywood have been assembled: leading the pack is Sadiq Dabba, who has been signed up to voice Ilia while Mr. Makinde Adeniran of BBC’s ‘Story Story’, is playing the role of Casting Director.

Faced with funding concerns owing to the magnanimity of this project, the studio has set up a Kickstarter to crowdfund this project. They are also willing to enter partnerships with corporates and individuals. As part of the kick starter campaign to raise the first milestone of USD30,000, Magic Carpet released the movie teaser, watch below.

You can support this project by donating via Kickstarter (international donors/PayPal) or the project’s website (optimized for local currency). The studio provides givebacks for every donation level. To participate in this project, or have the folks at Magic Carpet translate your gaming, illustration and animation needs to life, contact them at hello@magiccarpet.studio

Magic Carpet is a subsidiary of Imaginarium Creative Global Limited, a content factory, which is listed in Business Day’s Top 100 Fastest Growing SMEs in Nigeria. You can learn more about the studio, its Magic Lab Project which aims to train one thousand animators in 5 years, and more, on the studio’s website.

#AFRIFF2018 Film Review: Nigerian Prince is problematic

$
0
0

In Nigerian Prince, the debut film by, Faraday Okoro, Lagos living comes right down to a series of scams. There is almost nothing redeeming. The teenage protagonist of Nigerian Prince, Eze (Antonio J. Bell) finds out soon enough upon landing reluctantly in Lagos. His parents, both Nigerian immigrants to the United States of America are going through a rough patch and their situation has begun to take its toll. Following a bust in school, Eze’s mom dispatches him back home to get in touch with his roots. Eze arrives Lagos to the waiting arms of his aunt Grace (Tina Mba) a strict University professor. If only she had been successful at raising her own son.

But first, the con.

At the arrival wing of the international airport, an immigration official attempts to fleece him of some dollars. Some fast-footed intervention by an expatriate saves the day and an already testy Eze finds that navigating the streets of Lagos will take more than an all-American air of entitlement.

Nigerian Prince is the result of Faraday Okoro’s $1 million grant via the AT&T Presents: Untold Stories programme. For his winning entry, Okoro received mentorship from the Tribeca Film Festival and the Tribeca Film Institute as well as executive producer assists from Spike Lee and Biyi Bandele. Made for an international audience, Nigerian Prince which closed the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) in Lagos this November, is a breezy, sometimes tough to take romp through crime ridden Lagos.

Back at aunt Grace’s, Eze has to deal with Nigerian urban mainstays like shortage of power and personal space but his biggest challenge will be fending off the snake like charms of his elder cousin Pius (Chinaza Uche). Pius is the typical internet scammer aka yahoo boy and he is quite proud of it. His choice of lifestyle has kept him estranged from his mother and rendered him anti-social- he’s scammed everyone he knows, some twice- but the lure of fast wealth remains overpowering for him. He is also in a testy relationship with the police boss who is squeezing in aggressively for a share of the profits.

Desperate to get back home, Eze against his aunt’s instructions, scores a deal with Pius that will get him on a flight back home. On a good day, he is really no match for Pius’ endless machinations. Getting in bed with a desperate Pius who is himself caught in an extremely tight corner may well be his undoing. Nigerian Prince is set up as a coming of age story this way.

Faraday Okoro may have that most Nigerian of names but Nigerian Prince isn’t necessarily richer because of his involvement. The film suffers from a thoroughly cynical gaze and goes on to tell a single story of corruption, crime and hopelessness. It begins with the lead, Pius’ far from convincing Nigerian accent (Think Will Smith in Concussion) and continues through the character’s selfish motivations, the ruthlessness of the other supporting characters and the vicious dog eat dog world that is set up. Lagos can be a nasty piece of work but Okoro’s script dials it up so high. When a feeble attempt is made to humanize Pius by having him ask question the whereabouts of an accomplice nabbed early in the film, it doesn’t quite ring true.

Still, Nigerian Prince is quite self-assured and Sheldon Chau’s cinematography bathes Victoria Island in a noir-ish glow lending a sense of urgency that the screenplay never quite manages until the final score. If anything, Okoro is faithful to his vision and enlists winning performances from his mostly Nigerian cast. Everyone- cast and crew- gives a good account of themselves at the end of the day. If only the material was more layered.

We were almost sure that Up North will pitch Adesua Etomi-Wellington with Banky W, but it seems like the producers had other plans.

Up North

In a teaser released today, Banky W (Bassey) is seen encouraging Ibrahim Suleiman (Sadiq) to shoot this shot with Adesua (Zainab). That’s not all; it also looks like his love interest will be Rahama Sadau (Maryam). But then with Inkblot Productions, we have learnt that a lot of these things are not the way it seems.

Revenir (To Return) is a film by filmmaker David Fedele and Kumut Imesh, a political refugee from the Ivory Coast who is currently living in France.

The film which is part road trip, part memoir and part journalistic investigation follows Kumut as he returns to Africa and attempts to retrace the same journey that he himself took more than ten years ago when he was forced to flee the civil war in his country. However, this time he’s got a camera in hand.

In 2004, Kumut was forced to flee civil war in the Ivory Coast, seeking a peaceful and safe place to live. He began the long journey across Africa, finally arriving in Morocco where he spent 7 years. While in Morocco he worked closely with NGOs and associations working closely with other migrants, providing support and assistance.

In 2013 he met the film director David Fedele in Morocco, and he worked as the translator for the film The Land Between. During this time, Kumut developed a very keen interest in documentary film-making, especially the potential to tell stories from an African perspective, and the original idea to make a film retracing his journey across Africa was born.

In 2014 Kumut arrived in Europe, and was granted asylum. He currently lives as a refugee with his wife and small child in France.

Rather than shooting a regular documentary, filmmakers Moritz Siebert and Estephan Wagner decided to hand their camera to Abou Bakar Sidibe, a Malian hoping to get into Europe through Morocco.

In northern Morocco, there’s the Spanish enclave of Melilla: Europe on African land. On the mountain above, live more than a thousand hopeful African migrants, watching the fence separating Morocco and Spain. Abou is one of them.

Dreaming of a new life in Europe, these migrants plan to cross the border illegally but at the border is the problem of a high fence with 24-hour surveillance cameras and police officers ready to deal harshly with anyone who dares to make the jump. Only a few make it across. Others get caught, give up or lose their lives in the attempt.

This film follows the small community of Senegalese women who are living and working in Casablanca, in limbo between “regularisation” in Morocco, or attempting to “cross” to Europe.

With humour and sensitivity, the film documents their daily life, as well as their struggles – trying to organise themselves and survive in a Moroccan society that is at the same time generous and hostile.
